Georgia Piedmont Technical College, also known as GPTC, is a technical college in Clarkston, Georgia. The school is a member of the Technical College System of Georgia. The school serves the counties of the metropolitan Atlanta area. The school’s service areas include Newton County, Dekalb County, Rockdale County, and Morgan County.
GPTC was founded as the DeKalb Area Vocational School in 1961. The school was run by the DeKalb County Board of Education and it was first formed along with the Vocational Division of the State Department of Education. From 1972 to 1986, the DeKalb Technical College was run by the campus of Georgia Perimeter College. The school was set as the post secondary unit of DeKalb County School System until 1996. On the same year, DeKalb Tech started operating as a member of the Technical College System of Georgia. Then in 2000, DeKalb Technical Institute was renamed as the DeKalb Technical College. Recently, the school changed its name once again to its current name of Georgia Piedmont Technical College.
The inaugural class of the school in 1961 only had 18 students. During that time, the school was in temporary quarters while the main campus was still under construction. Then in 1963, the North Indian Creek Drive facility opened. The facility was made up of 5 buildings, with a total floor space of around 275,000 square feet.
GPTC’s main campus is located in Clarkson but the college also has a campus in Covington, as well as 9 other centers in different counties. The school receives an average of more than 8,000 student each term, with more than 9,000 more srtudents enrolled in adult education and other continuing education courses. Academic and technical programs offered by the school make up over 120 different occupations. The school also employs over 260 full time staff and faculty members, with another 600 part time staff members. The school colors are red, yellow, and blue.
